Transgender Discrimination is illegal in New York City. Under the New York City Human Rights Law (“NYCHRL”), transgender individuals are protected against workplace discrimination. The NYCHRL explicitly states that no one can be discriminated against on the basis of gender. The law then defines gender as "a person's gender identity, self-image, appearance, behavior or expression, whether or not that gender identity, self-image, appearance, behavior or expression is different from that traditionally associated with the legal sex assigned to that person at birth." Thus, transgender individuals are entitled to the same workplace rights as all other individuals in New York City.
